My favourite Yoga Mat(s)

... because I find it too hard to pick just one!

I often have students ask me what yoga mat I recommend. In this new world we find ourselves in, you may have picked up a new habit, increased the frequency of your existing yoga practice or you may have found that you now need to bring a mat to your favourite classes. Whatever the reason, if you are in the market for a new mat, I have some suggestions for you....

There are many variations and different companies in the market to bring you comfort during your practice. There are also many different price points when it comes to a Yoga mat. I suggest purchasing your mat based on how often you practice. If you practice a lot, it may be a better investment for you to purchase a higher quality mat that will last longer, if you are just starting out, a Yoga mat that you find at Winners/Walmart/Marshalls may be just what you need.

I have found that comfort level and ability to practice on both a more expensive and a less expensive mat are the same, where you will find the difference between the two is the longevity of your mat. The higher price mats also may offer more eco-friendly options. If this is important to you, you may want to choose a mat made of natural or recycled materials such as jute or recycled rubber. Most standard mats are made of vinyl or PVC, which can sustain several years of regular practice. The options are truly endless if you allow yourself to go down the "Yoga Mat" rabbit hole on google.

For me, the comfort level of the mat is very important, I want a thicker mat to protect my knees during my practice. I suggest a 6mm thickness mat, anything thicker than that is probably a Pilates mat. You can watch my video to see the difference, and a quick little trick to know if you are purchasing a Pilates or Yoga mat.
