Restorative Yoga in a face paced world

In a fast paced world, we often find ourselves drawn to fast paced lives. Our minds move fast, our speech is fast, our body movements are fast. Very often we find the days moving very quickly away from us. We may get annoyed and frustrated if our web-pages and computers aren't loading as fast as they could be, it is also very common to see frustration in grocery store or drive-thru window lines.

To live in this fast paced world and to "keep up", it puts our bodies in a heightened state of arousal, keeping us in the "fight or flight" response. We are running away from time itself, or rather being late, or getting behind. We may have even forgotten how it feels to be totally relaxed, that feeling of knowing that life is just as it is, that feeling of being totally relaxed in our bodies.

The practice of Restorative Yoga can help to balance our fast-paced lives. During a Restorative yoga class we will fully relax into the stretch so that tension can slowly be released from our bodies and our minds. Ideally, as our bodies and minds begins to relax, another response opposite to the fight or flight response kicks in. This is called the relaxation response, and it is governed by the parasympathetic nervous system.

Life is about balance, and although we are all a part and have to take part in this fast-paced world, it is truly beneficial and important to find time to step out of the fast lane. Make a commitment to finding balance and peace in your life and commit to it daily.
