Toga (Yoga for the Feet)

Our bodies are truly amazing, all of the different systems and parts working together in order for us to eat, breathe and function in our daily lives. Take for instance our feet, there may be a big distance between our brain and our big toe, but with each step, the feet are sending messages to the brain, the brain then makes the specific adjustments in our bodies to keep us balanced, supported and mobile. All of this communication is going on every day, with every step and without our knowledge, and this is just one part of our body!

This week in my Yoga Classes, we are working on the Root Chakra. With this Chakra, it is important to think about the parts of our bodies that come into contact with the Earth. Our feet help to connect us and ground us to our world, just as the Root Chakra helps to connect and ground our spirit into the world.

In Yoga practice, you can think of building your standing poses from the ground up. Really focus on your feet and feel the support and stability when you are in tree pose, the strength they give us in warrior poses and the mobility they offer us in poses like hero and chair pose. This month in your yoga practice, as well as in your daily life, see if you can bring more awareness to your feet, feeling that strong connection to the Earth.
