People attend yoga classes for a variety of reasons, some of the reasons are to increase flexibility, better health, stress relief and physical fitness. My first introduction to yoga was an early memory of watching Lilias Yoga and You when I was a child in the 70s. Flash forward to the early 2000s and my first 'yoga' class was a Yogalates class that I attended with my mother and sister. We went as our "girls night out", little did I know where that adventure would lead me.
Although I didn't seek out yoga for the reasons listed above, I remember being amazed by the strength and power my body produced in Warrior 2, I remember being amazed that my body could work so hard while standing still and I remember being hooked in that moment.
After that, I began taking Yoga classes at various places, and I enjoyed the "exercise" that I got from my weekly classes. It wasn't until I moved to Brantford in 2009 that I attended a class and my Yoga world opened wide up.
Sometimes for people, their primary reason for attending a yoga class will change over time, as was the case for me. My primary reason to attend a class was a night away from the little ones at home, it changed to an "exercise" option, one of many that I attended at the local gym, and eventually turned into an inner connection of body, mind, breath and spirit that I could have never imagined all those years ago as I watched Lilias in her unitard.
There have been a handful of teachers that have inspired me on my mat, both in person and online. There have also been other teachers that while I have enjoyed the practice on the mat, I didn't feel that deeper connection with them. That didn't mean they didn't offer that to their students, it just meant that the connection wasn't there for me. You will find the teacher that is just right for you, if that is not me, I am never offended by that. I am happy that you attended a class and are on your path to a deeper practice.
I now practice for self-reflection, to instil kindness and self-compassion in my life and continued growth and self-awareness, all while connecting my body, breath, mind and spirit on my mat.
