Mindfulness is a word that is used very often these days, but what exactly does this mean?
I am sure that if you asked one hundred people that question, you would get one hundred different answers.
It is a word that I have begun to use to describe how I teach. Very often I will get asked, "what type of yoga do you teach", and while I have taught many different types of yoga, they all have a common thread, "I teach Mindful Yoga".
If you asked what mindfulness is to me, it is the ability to connect to the present moment, by calming the mind and connecting to the body and the breath.
Breathing is something that we do on a daily basis, yet how often do we think about the quality of our breath? In all of my classes, you will be asked to explore your breath. This connectin is one of the easiest ways to become mindful and be in the present moment. It is amazing to experience how one simple exploration can bring calmness, relieve stress and lessen anxiety or worry.
Mindful breathing can be used as a powerful mindfulness meditation. Simply bring your attention on your breathing, the natural rhythm and flow, the way each inhale and exhale moves the body, focusing the mind on these rythmic movements.
This meditation is also very helpful to stop our minds from being carried away with emotions, there is truth to the old adage, "Take a deep breath".
